Antimicrobial Resistance in Salmonella Serovars Isolated From an Egg-Producing Region in Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Benevides,VP; Rubio,MS; Alves,LBR; Barbosa,FO; Souza,AIS; Almeida,AM; Casas,MRT; Guastalli,EAL; Soares,NM; Berchieri Jr,A.
ABSTRACT Fowl paratyphoid infections are caused by different Salmonella serovars that can affect a wide range of hosts. Due to its complex epidemiology, Salmonella serovar identification is crucial for the development and implementation of monitoring and control programs in poultry farms. Moreover, the characterization of the antimicrobial resistance profiles of Salmonella strains isolated from livestock is relevant to public health because they are a common causative agent of foodborne diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of Salmonella spp. and to identify the antimicrobial resistance profiles of strains isolated in the midwestern region of São Paulo state, which accounts for the highest production of table eggs in Brazil....

Detection of integrons among multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical specimens in northern west of Iran BJM
Rezaee,Mohammad Ahangarzadeh; Sheikhalizadeh,Vajihe; Hasani,Alka.
Transference of resistance determinants by integrons is one of the important factors that can contribute to the increase in multi-resistant bacteria. We determined the prevalence and class of integrons among multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical specimens in Tabriz teaching hospitals. Firstly, susceptibility of 140 isolates to 13 antibiotics was determined using the disc diffusion method. Then, prevalence and class of integrons was detected in MDR strains by PCR-RFLP. One hundred five (75%) of total 140 isolates were uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Other pathotypes included were: diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (13; 9.3%), sepsis-associated E. coli (5; 3.6%) and newborn meningitis-associated E. coli (2; 1.4%)....

Ecology of blood stream infection and antibiotic resistance in intensive care unit at a tertiary care hospital in North India BJID
Wattal,Chand; Raveendran,Reena; Goel,Neeraj; Oberoi,Jaswinder Kaur; Rao,Brijendra Kumar.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the prevalent microorganisms and their antimicrobial resistance among intensive care unit patients in a tertiary care centre in New Delhi.METHODS: A retrospective study of all consecutive blood cultures from various intensive care unit patients in the hospital during four years (January 2008 to December 2011). Antibiotic consumption data in the intensive care units were also analysed during the same period.RESULTS: Out of the total 22,491 blood cultures processed, 2846 samples were positive and 3771 microorganisms were isolated. The blood culture positivity was estimated as 12.7% of which 67.5% were monomicrobial and 32.5% polymicrobial infections. Gram negative bacilli, Gram positive cocci, and fungi were isolated in 49%, 33%, and...

Inactivation of MarR gene homologs increases susceptibility to antimicrobials in Bacteroides fragilis BJM
Silva,Clara Maria Guimarães; Silva,Déborah Nascimento dos Santos; Costa,Scarlathe Bezerra da; Almeida,Juliana Soares de Sá; Boente,Renata Ferreira; Teixeira,Felipe Lopes; Domingues,Regina Maria Cavalcanti Pilotto; Lobo,Leandro Araujo.
ABSTRACT Bacteroides fragilis is the strict anaerobic bacteria most commonly found in human infections, and has a high mortality rate. Among other virulence factors, the remarkable ability to acquire resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents and to tolerate nanomolar concentrations of oxygen explains in part their success in causing infection and colonizing the mucosa. Much attention has been given to genes related to multiple drug resistance derived from plasmids, integrons or transposon, but such genes are also detected in chromosomal systems, like the mar (multiple antibiotic resistance) locus, that confer resistance to a range of drugs. Regulators like MarR, that control expression of the locus mar, also regulate resistance to organic solvents,...

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis among male inmates in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJM
Lourenço,Maria Cristina da Silva; Silva,Marlei Gomes da; Fonseca,Leila de Souza.
Susceptibility tests to six anti-tuberculosis drugs were performed on fifty-eight M. tuberculosis isolates obtained from tuberculous inmates in the Male Penal Sanatorium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The rate of resistant tuberculosis was higher than that observed in the community. The overall resistance rate was 17.2% and 3.4% of the isolates were multi-drug resistant.

Safety and efficacy of a novel drug elores (ceftriaxone + sulbactam + disodium edetate) in the management of multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in tertiary care centers: a post-marketing surveillance study BJID
Chaudhary,Manu; Mir,Mohd Amin; Ayub,Shiekh Gazalla.
Abstract Objective: In India, Elores (CSE-1034: ceftriaxone + sulbactam + disodium edetate) was approved as a broad spectrum antibiotic in year 2011 and is used for management of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases/Metallo Beta lactamases infections in tertiary care centers. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of this drug in patients with Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases/Metallo Beta lactamases infections and identify the incidence of adverse events in real clinical settings. Methods: This Post Marketing Surveillance study was conducted at 17 centers across India and included 2500 patients of all age groups suffering from various bacterial infections and treated with Elores (CSE1034). Information regarding demographic, clinical...
